What helped you get into an Ivy League college?
I can answer this question as a counsellor whose students have got into Ivy League universities.
- PLAN WELL IN ADVANCE i.e. FROM HIGH SCHOOL ONWARDS
- FIRST CROSS THE FILTERS i.e. GRADES/SCORES/TOEFL/SAT/ACT etc. This essentially means that your marks and scores will only get you shortlisted for a review. Incase you do not have the desired scores you will be eliminated and not shortlisted for the next round.
- ESSAYS AND RECOMMENDATION LETTERS- WHAT SETS YOU APART. WHAT HAVE YOU DONE DIFFERENT/EXTRA. HAVE YOU DEMONSTRATED THAT YOU ARE DRIVEN . THAT YOU ARE A DOER RATHER THAN A TALKER. ARE YOU A RESPONSIBLE MEMBER OF SOCIETY? DO YOU GIVE BACK TO SOCIETY? DO YOU HAVE THE RIGHT ATTITUDE? ARE YOU SOMEONE WHO WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO THE WORLD?
- THE LAST BUT NOT THE LEAST- HOW WILL YOU ADD TO THE DIVERSITY OF THE CLASSROOM! WHAT WILL YOU BRING TO THE CLASSROOM AS A PERSON? HOW WELL WILL YOU USE THE RESOURSES OF THE UNIVERSITY? ARE YOU THE BEST FIT FOR THE UNIVERSITY AND VISA VERSA!
